Demand for data centre space has been growing rapidly over a number of years. Many data centres are full or near capacity and as a result, the cost of space in a data centre has increased significantly, in many cases doubling or trebling in the last 3 years.
A recent survey of major data centre suppliers in London and Manchester showed that vast majority had little room for growth without any additional capacity coming on line until the third quarter of 2008. The Olympic games in 2012 will have a further drain on data centre and power requirements in the capital, pushing up costs further. A report by the research organisation Gartner says the data centre market is already supply constrained and a continued push will result in rapid cost increases.
Companies have to find ways of using their data centre space more efficiently to allow for growth and reduce costs. Server hardware is now smaller and more powerful than ever before meaning more can be fitted into the same space. Even so, the number of applications hosted away from the desktop has increased significantly in the last few years resulting in a requirement for even more servers. Virtualisation is the only real option to isolate applications and reduce the physical server footprint.
