With ever increasing data centre costs and server sprawl it is becoming increasingly more important for companies to invest in virtualisation technology. Many organisations find themselves in a situation where they have a ratio of physical servers to users of 1:10, with over 90% of these servers showing average CPU utilisation of less than 10%.
Virtualisation technology allows multiple guest operating systems, Windows, Linux etc., to be hosted on a single physical server, increasing CPU utilisation to around 80%. This consumes less power and rack space in the data centre to such an extent that a return on investment can be realised within the first twelve months. In addition to the consolidation benefits of virtualisation, many of the Enterprise products are packaged with enhanced business continuity and disaster recovery features.
