1. How does Software Metering for Decision Makers work?



A Windows service runs on the client computer. This service collects application usage information and uploads the information to the Software Metering server.

2. What information is captured?



The following information is captured:

  • Executable name (Filename)
  • File path including local and mapped drives
  • File Description
  • Company or Publisher
  • Version
  • User (Domain and Local Users)

3. Does it capture use of all executables?

No, Software Metering captures usage of application from the active window. Use of applications that are part of the Windows Operating System e.g. notepad.exe are ignored as is usage of Internet Explorer.

4. Why are some applications ignored?



Software Metering is not designed to be "Big Brother". Applications are ignored to reduce the total amount of data and make reporting more meaningful and manageable. Software Metering is designed to help you reduce the cost associated with Software Licences. If it part of the operating system why capture it?

5. How does the agent communicate with the server?



Client / Server communication uses HTTP port 80

6. Can I capture software usage for assets when they are not on the corporate network?



Yes, the software metering will record data until the asset is connected back to the network. At this point it will upload its data.

7. What operating systems does the agent support?

The Software Metering Client supports Microsoft Windows NT4, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7 and 2008.

8. Can the agent be used on Citrix and Terminal Servers?



Yes, the data is captured by user and uploaded by computer.

9. How much data does the agent upload to the server?



A Software Metering profile is typically less than 1KB

The Software Metering Client is set to upload its profile once every 24 hours

11. Do I need to purchase a Microsoft SQL Licence?



No, Software Metering will run quite happily on SQL 2005 Express Edition for up to 5000 computers.
